Steve Brisk, the founder and current Chairman of Speakeasier was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1980 at the age of 29. A highly ambitious and successful Sales Manager for Clarks Shoes when he was first diagnosed, Steve never had a day off sick.

In 2001, Steve met young single mother Caroline who had a 14 year-old son. Her MS had taken an unusually savage course badly affecting her speech, making it impossible for her to converse with her son and family. So heart rending was Caroline’s plight and with little or no statutory funding available for the purchase of a suitable speech aid, Steve set the foundations for the Speakeasier charity. A “Lightwriter” machine would have helped Caroline enormously as it operates a speech synthesiser just by the blink of an eye. Unfortunately however Caroline’s condition deteriorated rapidly before she was able to learn to use the speech aid.
